Westtown School seeks an experienced full-time Groundskeeper to assist with athletic field maintenance and general groundskeeping responsibilities, including maintaining the school’s athletic fields, recreational areas, and campus grounds. The Athletic Field Maintenance and Groundskeeper will be responsible for grass and lawn care, pesticide application, and assisting with the overall maintenance of the school’s 600+ acre campus. This is a full-time, year-round position with full benefits including paid time off, paid holidays and breaks, retirement benefits, tuition remission, and health, dental, and vision coverage. Facilities team members are considered essential personnel and, as such, are expected to be available during inclement weather and other school-closing situations.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Experienced horticulturalists or turf specialists will be assigned duties tailored to their areas of expertise in addition to general groundskeeper duties;
  • Mows grass and trims lawns;
  • Maintains all athletic fields and recreational play areas including layout, lining, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, and general maintenance.;
  • Applies pesticides and treatments, as necessary;
  • Prunes and mulches trees and shrubs, rakes leaves;
  • Operates a tractor, loader, and other grounds vehicles;
  • Weeds and maintains garden beds and other landscaping;
  • Plants trees, shrubs, and annuals, as directed;
  • Assists with removal and disposal of trash and other debris;
  • Removes snow and ice using power snow blowers, chemical ice melters, truck-mounted plows, shovels, and/or ice scrapers. Must be available for early morning and/or late-night hours when snow or ice is forecasted.
  • Maintains campus driveways and parking lots;
  • Provides support and manpower to other campus departments as necessary;
  • Maintains professional and appropriate relations with all students and parents at all times;
  • Maintains knowledge of school property and staff as necessary to perform assigned duties;
  • Reports unsafe conditions or suspicious activity as necessary;
  • Committed to safe work practices and energy conservation at all times;
  • Participates in departmental meetings and required training;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Physical Requirements 

 

  • Lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 50 lbs. regularly. Lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 100 lbs. occasionally with assistance;
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods;
  • Must be able to climb ladders;
  • Must be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions;
  • Must be able to push and/or pull heavy loads.

 

Qualifications

 

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Pesticide Applicator Certification is required, the School will cover the cost of renewal or initial certification
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in the care and maintenance of similar facilities or equivalent education, training, or experience
  • Ability to work  within the overall organization of the Facilities Department and work effectively with other team members
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record.
