The Dean of Students is responsible for promoting general order and supervising the conduct of the students throughout the school.  Dean is also the main contact for key safety issues. Provides student supervision and interventions to students experiencing problems in discipline and attendance. In collaboration with the Core Administration, acts as a resource to teachers in their instructional practice, especially as it relates to issues of discipline, relationships with students, classroom management, and school culture.

Roles and Responsibilities: 

Administrative:

  • Support the Head of School (HOS) and administration in fostering a nurturing educational atmosphere reflective of the IHM charism and gospel values.
  • Strive to develop a sense of integrity and self-discipline in each student.
  • Teach each student that she has an obligation to respect the rights and property of others.
  • Lead the students to an awareness of the importance of responsible decision making, aiming to have them understand that all decisions—good and bad—have consequences.
  • Assist in the development and support the school discipline policies.
  • Work to promote an environment in which the students feel physically and emotionally safe.
  • Assist and support other members of the administrative team as needed. 

Catholic Identity 

  • Serve on the Administration Leadership Team (CORE) and support the policies of the school, promoting the IHM charism in decision-making and behavior.
  • Model Christian behavior in the execution of the duties of the Dean of Students’ office, treating each faculty and staff member and student with respect.
  • Instill in the student body an appreciation of the uniqueness of others and to lead them to accept that a peaceful Christian community accepts the differences of others. 

Responsibilities 

  • Work with faculty and students to provide an environment conducive to learning throughout the school.
  • Prepare schedules and procedures for detention programand handles disciplinary issues.
  • Report conduct grades to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for student report cards.
  • Supervises the School Counseling team for student assistance.
  • Assist in evaluation of teachers by conducting formal classroom visits.
  • Responsible for creating and distributing the student handbook, reviewing the handbook, and communicating changes in the school regulations and revisions.
  • Oversees faculty member chosen to issue parking permits to teachers, staff, and students.
  • Serves in all safety drills and is a member of the school safety team. Responsible for parent-child reunification.
  • Communicates with parents, administration, the community and other schools and public agencies including the authorities and county agencies as necessary, including Safe2Say program coordination.
  • Moderate the Student Advisory Board and Integrity Code Hearings 
  • Budget responsibility for the Dean of Students’ office
  • Inform the Athletic Department and the coaches of the status of individual team members regarding permission to leave campus and return for games/practices.
  • Partner with Director of Counseling to address disciplinary/counseling related concerns for counseling caseloads.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Planning, organization, control and direction of operations and activities.
  • Organizational policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Principles and practices of administration, supervision, and training. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software.
  • Record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Public relations and speaking techniques.
  • Ability to manage, lead, and direct the functions and activities of a secondary school.
  • Demonstrate outstanding instructional, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Systematically analyze problems, determine alternative problem solutions, and make appropriate and effective decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Education Experience:

Master’s degree and five years of experience teaching in secondary education. Educational leadership degree preferred.
