The College Counselor assists and supports Villa Maria Academy students throughout their high school careers in the areas of academic achievement, college preparation and career development. The College Counselor collaborates with the faculty, staff, parents, administration, and external supports. As a member of the VMA community, the individual supports the mission and core values of Villa Maria Academy. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of five years teaching/counseling experience or college admissions experience
  • Valid PA counseling certificate is preferred.

Roles and Responsibilities: 

  • Support and uphold the mission of Villa Maria Academy and the charism of the Sisters of IHM
  • Advise, guide, and support VMA students and their families regarding the college application and selection process; additionally meet with faculty as needed to support student college application process.
  • Assist in planning and implementing relevant college events on campus each academic year.
  • Distribute college-related information to students and parents in a clear, timely manner.
  • Maintain knowledge of the curricular and extra-curricular programs in order to apply this knowledge towards course selection and when giving higher education assistance.
  • Maintain memberships in relevant organizations.
  • Stay current in the college admissions process and higher education trends by participating in professional development opportunities, visiting college campuses, attending counselor conferences, meetings, and workshops and develop and maintain relationships with college admissions representatives.
  • Write comprehensive and compelling letters of recommendation supporting the student’s application to higher education, scholarships, and employment.
  • Teach/co-facilitate Junior and Senior seminar courses.
  • Work collaboratively with school counseling team.
  • Educate students and parents on the effective use of SCOIR (how to schedule meetings, search for schools, create a resume)
  • Effectively utilize SCOIR and ensure Schoology courses are updated in a timely manner.
  • Meet with the Director of Curriculum before the course selection process begins to ensure knowledge of course sequences for appropriate advisement. 
  • Meet with Junior students to assist in course selection for their senior year; additionally meet with faculty as needed to support course selection.
  • Collaborate and communicate with the Counseling team members to discuss any concerns (college or student related)
  • Attend monthly department meetings. 
  • Support and participate in the administration of standardized testing.
