Position Purpose:

Direct Lower, Middle, and Upper School Choirs.  Foster choral experiences that connect course content to ensemble learning. Provide a spirit of inquiry, innovation, and a passion for choral singing. Serve as a stalwart Arts advocate while supporting the SCH, faculty, and students to ensure that we are living our mission and values through the following: 

Essential Functions:

  • Exemplifies excellence in conducting and rehearsal techniques fostering choral tone and blend in ensembles.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to cultural diversity throughout choral literature, particularly non-western and under-represented composers.
  • Leads choral groups in regular and special performances for school programs, community activities, and festivals during and outside the academic day.
  • Accompanies rehearsals and performances.
  • Connects the study of music to other disciplines when possible.
  • Uses effective classroom management techniques to create a warm and welcoming learning environment.
  • Maintains student attendance records, grades, and written feedback on graded assignments.
  • Offers students a variety of formats by which they can demonstrate skill mastery.
  • Collaborates with the Arts department on curricular planning and opportunities to showcase students.
  • Demonstrates, models, and designs learning experiences that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Advises approximately ten Middle School students and provides academic and emotional support to students.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and guardians of advisees.
  • Teaches advisory curriculum related to identity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Provides lunch/recess supervision.
  • Keeps daily attendance and records of students’ progress.
  • Attends professional development programs regularly.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of the Arts and/or Division Head.

 

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching choral music. 
  • Bachelor of Music Education preferred or Bachelor of Music with Conducting Concentration.  
  • Personal vocal modeling skills and solid vocal pedagogy for training young singers.
  • Strong accompaniment skills on the piano.
  • Flexibility and creativity in crafting appropriate challenges for a range of abilities within each class.
  • Ability to use technologies in the classroom.  
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum assessments and utilize teaching methodologies/best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Able to move around the classroom and other school environments.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
