Position: Director of Technology

The Baldwin School seeks a visionary and dynamic Director of Technology to lead and manage our school's technology initiatives across all PreK-12 educational levels. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Technology will oversee a team of skilled IT professionals, ensuring that technological resources and infrastructure effectively support our students, faculty, and staff. In addition, they will be well knowledgeable and an advocate for the integration of administrative and academic technology as both a strategic asset and a practical tool. This role is essential to maintaining a seamless, secure, and forward-thinking technology environment that enhances innovative learning and operational continuity within the school.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Policy Development
- Evaluate and establish technology best practices, policies, and procedures across all school departments;
- Responsible for strategic planning, both mid- and long-range, for Baldwin's academic and administrative technological needs;
- Oversee IT planning and manage the technology budgeting process in alignment with the School's strategic goals; and
- Assess and report on technology's impact on educational objectives and institutional effectiveness.
Budget Management & Vendor Relations
- Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to organize, manage, and oversee the school's technology budget;
- Conduct vendor selection, manage contracts, and ensure cost-effective procurement and deployment of technology resources; and
- Ensure financial accountability and strategic planning for future technology needs.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and mentor the technology team to deliver high-quality IT services, effective communication, and superior customer service;
- Seek and promote professional development opportunities for IT team members, as well as School faculty and staff; and
- Foster a culture of excellence in operational best practices, team collaboration, and professional growth within the IT department;
Technology Operations & Systems Management
- Maintain computer platforms and network servers, including data backup systems, and ensure reliable network functionality;
- Provide support for network accounts and manage computer systems across the school, including laptops, desktops, iPads, interactive whiteboards, printers, phones, and projectors; and
- Administer and manage the student laptop program, ensuring efficient device management and user support.
Hardware & Software Management
- Purchase, configure, install, and maintain hardware, including network equipment, individual devices, VoIP phone systems, and elements of the school's security infrastructure;
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all hardware, software licenses, subscriptions, and warranties, and regularly review their continued support of the School program;
- Oversee and manage the G Suite technology services, including Gmail, Groups, Drive, Sites, and other cloud-based services;
- Provide leadership and management of all audio-visual technologies, ensuring optimal performance and support for classrooms, events, and institutional needs in partnership with the Director of Technical Theater; and
- Develop and implement strategies for integrating advanced audio-visual technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and organizational communication.
Customer Support & Community Engagement
- Assess and respond to the technology needs of students, faculty, and staff in a timely and balanced manner;
- Address requests for technology support in classrooms, office spaces, audio-visual systems, and theater spaces, ensuring a seamless user experience;
- Facilitate regular communication with the school community about technology plans, projects, policies, and procedures, including training opportunities;
- Design and implement a program that involves Upper School students in supporting IT and AV initiatives, fostering leadership, technical skills, and real-world experience; and
- Other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer or Head of School.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in technology leadership or management roles.
- Technical Expertise:
- Proven experience with Blackbaud and Canvas platforms, including administration and user support;
- Experience with G Suite tools including Gmail, Google Drive, Sites, and other Google Apps;
- Advanced Mac and Windows operating systems knowledge, including integration and troubleshooting in a mixed environment; and
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365, including Exchange, Teams, SharePoint, and related productivity tools.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to support a dynamic IT infrastructure;
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders;
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, projects, and vendor relationships;
- Knowledge of data security, privacy standards, and compliance best practices;
- Ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple projects, handle details, and work effectively under pressure, all with minimum supervision;
- Capacity to interact with technologically diverse populations and to provide exceptional customer service;
- Ability to communicate effectively utilizing interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with other department staff, faculty, students and the public;
- General management and organizational skills; and
- Flexibility and ability to cope with several tasks simultaneously;
- Additional Qualifications:
- Certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, Apple Certified Support Professional).
- Experience in an educational setting or with educational technology solutions;
- Comfortable working with a variety of general and position-specific computer systems;
- Demonstrated commitment to teamwork, collaboration, accountability, and a positive environment through daily personal interactions and management approach; and
Embrace the needs and requirements associated with an academic calendar and schedule, which may necessitate fluctuations in workdays and hours, including weekends or holidays, when required.
