Friends Select School is looking for a controller who is responsible for overseeing all accounting, payroll, benefit, and banking operations for the School. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this position also works with the School’s auditor to prepare the financial audit and performs other regulatory and compliance work as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Overseeing the School’s accounting functions, including maintaining the General Ledger, Chart of Accounts, entering budget information, and other related accounting systems and duties
- Working with the HR Administrator, oversee all payroll and benefit functions for the School, including processing bi-weekly payroll, benefit enrollment/changes, and year-end tax documents such as W2s
- Working with the Associate Controller, oversee the School’s Accounts Payable and Student Billing systems and ensure that all revenue and expenses are recorded appropriately
- Working with the Development Office, oversee and perform all accounting functions related to fundraising, including endowment tracking/unitization, pledges receivable, accounting of investments, and reconciliation of funds received
- Managing all banking operations for the school, including overseeing and processing deposits and check runs, performing transfers, submitting wires and ACH payments, and performing other general banking functions
- Performing all year-end closing entries and preparing the School’s financial audit, including balance sheet, statement of activities, cash flow statement, and other notes as required/directed by the School’s auditor. Additionally, oversee the School’s 403(b) audit
- Ensuring that all bank accounts are reconciled timely and accurately, as well as any other accounts that require reconciliation
Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position has the following:
- College degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Significant coursework in accounting (including non-profit accounting) or some other professional accounting designation (CPA, CMA, etc)
- Experience managing the accounting functions for an organization (non-profit preferred), including General Ledger, AR, AP, payroll, and benefits
- Experience performing bank reconciliations or other types of account reconciliations, as well as general banking operations experience
- Knowledge of the year end closing process as well as ability to manage a non-profit financial audit, including creation of related audit documents
- Familiarity with non-profit endowment accounting and unitization as well as accounting for investments a plus
- Strong technology skillset, including familiarity with proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Workspace
- Familiarity with Blackbaud Financial Edge, Blackbaud Tuition Management, and Paycor a plus
- Ability to manage a large volume of email requests and respond timely, accurately, and appropriately
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to balance multiple responsibilities at a time
