 Middle and Upper School Latin Teacher

Westtown School seeks a full-time Latin teacher to teach Middle and Upper School Latin, beginning in August. The successful candidate will be comfortable teaching all levels of Latin, have experience teaching through comprehensible input and engaging in spoken Latin, be familiar with educational technologies, and have a passion for the subject. Candidates should also expect to help organize and participate in international experiential student trips to areas relevant to classical studies.

 

Based on the candidate's qualifications and experience, other core responsibilities will be assigned, equivalent to a full-time position for either a Middle or Upper School faculty member. Both Middle and Upper School roles support students holistically through teaching, advising, coaching, committee support, and other divisional duties. Upper School faculty contribute to our residential program as either Dorm Parents or Dorm Affiliates. Residential responsibilities require one weeknight of evening duty per week and scheduled weekend duties throughout the academic year. Housing may be available for faculty participating in the Upper School residential program, but is not guaranteed. Further details will be shared upon inquiry and through the interview process.

  • Develops culturally competent and responsive lessons and learning activities that promote problem-solving, creative thinking, collaboration, and effective communication skills while encouraging risk-taking in learning;
  • Contributes to building and sustaining an inclusive community and a program that reflects diverse cultures and perspectives;
  • Actively involves students in the classroom through group work, project-based learning, exploration, questioning, discussion, and other cooperative teaching techniques;
  • Interest in 21st-century pedagogy, integrated performance assessment, and continued professional growth is essential;
  • Integrates technology seamlessly into teaching strategies and practices;
  • Communicates effectively with all constituents – colleagues, administrators, parents, and students.

 

Qualifications

 

  • A bachelor’s degree in Education, Classics, or a related subject is preferred
  • Relevant classroom teaching experience, preferably in a Latin or world language classroom;
  • Experience in coaching interscholastic sports and an eagerness to participate in the athletics program is a plus;
  • Familiarity with Google products and the integration of a learning management system, Canvas, into best teaching practices;
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices;
  • A strong character with a team-oriented spirit and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community;
