Position Summary
The Network Administrator at the Hill School is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting a secure and reliable network infrastructure that supports the academic and operational needs of the school community. This role ensures the seamless operation of servers, networking hardware, and cloud-based services, while also supporting essential campus systems such as security, classroom technology, and environmental controls. The Network Administrator collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and the IT team to implement educational technology solutions and maintain a safe digital environment for students. Responsibilities include both on-campus and remote systems management, with availability during and outside regular school hours to ensure uninterrupted network service and timely issue resolution.
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain network servers and devices such as switches, routers, access points, and Wi-Fi controllers.
- Oversee essential systems, including security cameras, door controls, alerts, classroom bells, and HVAC systems.
- Support and manage virtual and cloud applications like VMware, Hyper-V, and Microsoft 365.
- Contribute to and maintain system documentation and standards.
- Ensure network disaster recovery planning and backup of crucial files and databases.
- Monitor system integrity and hardware/software availability and complete scheduled tasks.
- Research and implement new technologies for educational institutions.
- Administer user accounts, Microsoft 365, PaperCut, Microsoft SharePoint, and local area networks.
- Create and manage data connections between systems.
- Manage on-premise and cloud firewalls, including policy creation for network traffic.
- Administer Microsoft Azure/Entra ID single sign-on for web applications.
- Document network procedures and manage Active Directory Group Policy Objects.
- Respond to trouble tickets and resolve user technology issues.
- Manage static IP address assignments and network device configurations.
- Handle manual labor tasks such as moving switches and computers and installing servers and switches.
- Collaborate with ITS team and users to manage and complete projects effectively.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science (4-year program)
- Candidates with a certification in systems administration or cyber security are preferred. Additionally, Microsoft, VMware, or Aruba certifications are considered a plus.
- Two years' experience in system and network administration.
- Knowledgeable in IT best practices, including ITIL and Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF).
Physical Demands
The physical demands of this position are consistent with those of a typical IT/network administration role within a school environment. The Network Administrator must be able to:
- Lift and transport computer equipment, servers, switches, and other networking hardware weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Crawl under desks, access tight or confined spaces (such as network closets and server rooms), and climb ladders or step stools to install or troubleshoot equipment.
- Spend extended periods of time working at a computer or monitoring systems.
- Walk across campus buildings to access network infrastructure or support users.
- Perform repetitive tasks such as wiring, cable management, and equipment configuration.
- Remain on call or work flexible hours as needed, including evenings or weekends, in response to system outages or maintenance windows.
