POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Dean of Students is the primary advocate for students and is responsible for non-academic, student-related matters. The Dean of Students will be responsible for upholding Church Farm School community standards and enforcing, interpreting and communicating student disciplinary policies and practices. This includes establishing and maintaining a positive culture of behavior and learning, partnering with teachers and residential faculty in behavior management and student discipline and working with the Director of Student Life to establish a professional rapport with administration, faculty/staff, students and families regarding discipline and behavioral issues.

Working closely with members of the Student Life team, administration, faculty and the larger CFS community, the Dean of Students will be responsible for assisting the Director of Student Life with developing and implementing policies, practices and protocols that serve to support scholar respect and well-being while ensuring for a safe and healthy community. The Dean of Students demonstrates visible, active leadership in the daily life of the school.

Potential candidates for the Dean of Students position must demonstrate an ability to interact positively and collaboratively with colleagues and families and must have an approachable but direct/firm disposition with students as well as embody Church Farm School’s behavior management philosophy of leading with relationships and compassion.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary focus of the Dean of Students includes, but is not limited to, the following:

School Culture and Discipline

  • Model the school’s core values and set the standard for behavior.
  • Maintain positive, constructive and professional relationships with colleagues, students and families.
  • Ensure that all students know and abide by the school rules and norms.
  • Maintain an active presence in common areas throughout the campus to ensure a positive school environment.
  • Monitor daily conduct reports for student infractions.
  • Oversee assigning consequences for minor and major infractions.
  • Refer repeated minor, major and severe infractions to the Director of Student Life.
  • Coordinate conferences with faculty and students as it relates to behavioral issues.
  • Keep accurate student discipline records for family meetings or phone calls.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Student Life, create systems necessary to monitor and support student character development.
  • Manage morning breakfast during the school week.
  • Manage attendance for Wednesday Chapel services.
  • Coordinate and supervise morning detentions.
  • Communicate with administration, advisors, grade level chairs and families as it relates to discipline issues.
  • Serve as member of the Student Support Team.
  • Serve as member of SOAR committee for new student orientation.
  • Assist the Director of Student Life with yearly revision of the student-parent handbook.
  • Coordinate weekend morning work obligations for students with the SWAT Coordinator.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Life to recognize and celebrate student achievement and progress as it relates to their character.
  • Be available for any emergencies regarding discipline on weekdays and weekends.

Student Activities and Leadership

  • Serve as a faculty council member for the National Honor Society and Honor Council.
  • Serve as an advisor for the CFS advisory program.
  • Serve as Chair of the Conduct Review Board (CRB).
  • Serve as AOD2 one evening a week and during scheduled weekend duty.
  • Serve as member of planning and delivery team for new student orientation programs.
  • This role may have teaching responsibilities (up to 2 classes).
  • May coach one sport team.
  • May have programmatic responsibilities related to Advisory program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

·         At least five years of teaching, administrative or supervisory experience required. Experience developing and teaching SEL preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree required (graduate degree preferred).
  • Experience conducting thorough investigations and making appropriate recommendations.
  • Experience in analyzing data to drive decision making.
  • Experience in using technology to manage student and family information.
  • Demonstrate the qualities of compassion, empathy and openness, while using excellent active listening and communication skills.
  • Maintain high professional standards for integrity, tactfulness, discretion and fairness while nurturing a diverse and dynamic student community.
  • Manage complex situations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Work with a diverse student population.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and desire to work as a team member with faculty, staff and administration.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and high level of professionalism working in a demanding position.
  • Meet the needs of students learning at various levels.
  • Demonstrate a high level of care for students but possess a firm personality and hold them accountable in a structured environment.
  • Handle multiple responsibilities, set priorities, organize workload and meet deadlines in a fast-paced working environment.
