Upper School Academic Support (Part-Time)

The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Upper School Academic Support Teacher to work within our Student Support Department. This will be a part-time position beginning August 15, 2025. Student Support at Shipley provides school-based and developmentally appropriate interventions, enrichment, and support for students' physical, social, emotional, and academic well-being. Shipley student support approaches each student situation with a multi-systemic lens and thus includes Academic Support, Counseling, and Nursing, as well as collaboration with College Counseling and Athletic Trainers when appropriate. The level and frequency of intervention and/or support is determined by the team in consultation with families and outside specialists, and we follow the process outlined by the ADA to provide reasonable accommodations that maintain the school's mission. We communicate Student information to teachers on an as-needed basis so that classroom support and accommodations can be provided. Student Support works best when we are in close partnership with families as well as any outside resources (tutors, doctors, counselors, consultants).

Major Responsibilities:

  • Working with assigned students on organizational and time-management skills, encouraging student agency and self-advocacy
  • Reading psychoeducational testing and writing learning profiles for students that recognize both the testing results and the educational program at Shipley
  • Collaborating and strategizing around student learning with faculty in the Upper School
  • Working with the Upper School Student Support Team (Division Head, Academic Dean, Class Deans, Nurse and Counselor) to propose and fine-tune strategies for students who are struggling
  • Collaborating with the school nurse and athletic trainers around students with short-term support needs (e.g. students returning from absence, injuries requiring accommodations, concussion protocols)
  • Communicating regularly with parents
  • Serving as a resource for all Upper School students
  • Consulting with outside professionals (e.g. tutors, executive functioning coaches, counselors)

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must...

  • Effectively communicate with parents, students, academic support team, division administration, counselors, nurses, and teachers
  • Be well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Have a master's degree and/or experience as a reading specialist, special educator or other area of academic support.
