Position Summary The Hill School seeks a dynamic and forward-thinking Department Chair of Engineering and Computer Science to lead and support our growing Engineering program. The Department Chair will work closely with the Academic Dean and Associate Head of School to implement and enrich a curriculum that is both rigorous and innovative. This role includes teaching, departmental leadership, program coordination, and student mentorship, with the aim of fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and future-focused engineering culture on campus.

Responsibilities

  • Curricular oversight and Pedagogical Leadership: Serve as a positive, collaborative leader of the Engineering Department, modeling professionalism and intellectual curiosity. Develop and review the department's academic program, which includes overseeing curriculum development and revisions. Review and assess the department's academic programs and initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate. Serve as a departmental and campus leader in curriculum and pedagogy and guide conversations about teaching and learning.
  • Management and Mentorship: Frequent one-on-one and departmental communication, serve as a role model, guide, and coach to promote faculty development, collegiality, and expectations around professional excellence. Support teachers through regular class visits and growth-oriented feedback. Work closely with the Academic Dean and Dean of Faculty to identify, recruit, and retain outstanding new faculty.
  • Representation: Represent the interests of their department to the broader institution through committee work such as Academic Council and other committees as assigned. Serve as a channel of communication on program, personnel, and budgetary matters.
  • Student Oversight: Provide leadership and vision for the department, which includes student achievement. Establish standards for evaluating student achievement, including gathering data on assessments. Communicate regularly with students and use student input to shape the department's policies and procedures. Provide mentorship and guidance to students who are passionate about pursuing Engineering at the post-secondary level.
  • Budget and logistics: Manage and allocate the department's resources, including budget, space, and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall success and mission of the institution.

Co-curricular, Evening, and Weekend Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee Engineering-related co-curricular programs, including robotics, TSA, and other initiatives as determined by the School.
  • Supervise the Shirley Quadrivium Center and Engineering Lab one evening per week during study hall to offer student support and manage access to equipment and resources.
  • Be available to support occasional weekend programming in collaboration with other Engineering faculty and the Academic Dean.
  • Provide leadership and logistical oversight for the Hill School Robotics program, including strategic direction, competition participation (e.g., RoboCup and others), budgeting, staffing, travel, and student preparation.
  • Serve on a Weekend Duty Team approximately one weekend and month.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, STEM Education, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of teaching, program leadership, or relevant experience in an engineering or STEM educational setting.
  • Experience working in a school setting; familiarity with the boarding school environment is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, hands-on learning, and innovative STEM pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated success in curriculum development, academic leadership, or program oversight.
  • Experience managing department budgets, resources, and facilities.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate effectively with both faculty and students.
  • Experience with co-curricular or extracurricular programs such as robotics, TSA, or engineering competitions.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and student-centered learning environment.
  • Willingness to fully engage in the life of a residential boarding school community, including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
