Position Summary: The Haverford School is seeking a full-time Upper School Spanish teacher. Preferred candidates will have an academic background in the discipline and a record of demonstrated success working with young people in education or a related field. They are an enthusiastic individual who has demonstrated a passion for the culture and language of the Spanish-speaking world and for teaching that builds interest in, enthusiasm for, and mastery of the subject. In addition, the candidate will have the capacity to contribute to the life of the school in co-curricular areas, especially coaching and advising students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach four sections of Spanish, ideally at a standard and honors level, as high as Spanish V
    • Prepare course materials, including syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts
    • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
    • Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, assessments, projects, and papers
    • Plan course content, revise curricula, manage course materials, and develop methods of instruction
    • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students
  • Participate in school evaluation and professional development programs
  • Be fluent in Spanish, including experience studying or working in a Spanish-speaking environment
  • Advise students academically and socially in accordance with the school’s mission
  • Coach at least one athletic team and/or advise an extracurricular activity
  • Participate in infrequent evening or weekend activities, including meetings, professional development, or other school activities
  • Possesses an understanding of character, culture, and community and the implementation of those principles at independent schools
  • Other duties, as assigned

 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish or a related field
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience
  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, motivating, coaching, and mentoring high school students
  • A role model for students
  • Ability to meet classroom, advisory, and extra-curricular obligations on a consistent schedule
  • Ability to attend meetings before and after the regular school day schedule, and sometimes in the evening

  • Sense of humor, enthusiasm, and high ethical professional standards

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work in an environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and diverse contacts
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
  • Occasionally, be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional, climate-controlled office environment
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
