Position Purpose:

The Lower School Spanish Teacher, starting in late August 2026, supports the Language Department Chair and the Head of Lower School, faculty, and students to ensure that we are living our mission and values on a daily basis through the following:

Essential Functions:

I. Student Instruction:

  1. Develops curricula to support students' development of communication and intercultural competency skills in Spanish through comprehensible input, scaffolded tasks, and storytelling.
  2. Embeds Wit and Wisdom topics into the Spanish curriculum.
  3. Commits to teaching 90% in the target language.
  4. Prepares creative and interactive hands-on activities.
  5. Evaluates student progress through multiple measures.
  6. Tailors instruction to meet the needs of students.
  7. Creates a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  8. Manages student behavior through effective classroom management techniques.
  9. Prepares a community assembly for Hispanic Heritage Month.
  10. Integrates technology in student learning experiences.

II. Professional Conduct:

  1. Builds and maintains collaborative working relationships with colleagues and administration.
  2. Contributes positively to the culture of the division.
  3. Demonstrates a commitment to professional growth.

III. Any Other Duties Assigned by Head of Lower School

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or post-graduate work in Spanish or in teaching Spanish as a second language; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Prior teaching experience/demonstrated interest in teaching elementary-aged students.
  • Superior skills in teaching Spanish as a second language to children.
  • Excellent communication, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
  • Continued engagement in professional learning experiences through conferences, presentations, and/or workshops.
  • Proficient with GSuite.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Able to move around a classroom and other school environments.
  • Able to regularly use close and distance vision.
  • Turn, bend, reach, and occasionally climb.
  • Work in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment with a moderate noise level.
