Middle School Emerging Educators Fellowship

Westtown School is accepting applications for the Emerging Educator Fellowship program for the 2026-27 school year. 

The fellowship program provides aspiring educators with ongoing mentorship, professional development, immersive classroom experience, and community engagement. Rooted in our mission to develop the individual gifts of our community members, the Emerging Educators Fellowship is a scaffolded program that provides practical experience grounded in each educator's talents and interests. 

On-campus housing may be available, but is not guaranteed and would include participation in the Upper School residential program, including duty on one weeknight per week and scheduled weekend duties during the school year. This is a one-year program with the option to renew for a second year.

Westtown School is an independent Quaker, Pre-K–12 day and boarding school located on a 600-acre campus in West Chester, PA, approximately 30 miles west of Philadelphia. Guided by Quaker values, Westtown School inspires and prepares our students to become stewards and leaders of a better world.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Partner with a Middle School teacher to lead homeroom activities and teach community period lessons; 
  • Serve as a collaborative member of a grade-level team;
  • Participate actively in the life of the Middle School, including supervising school dances and field trips as assigned; 
  • Observe teachers in subject areas of interest;
  • Plan and implement two units in a subject area of interest, in partnership with a supervising teacher; 
  • Serve as a substitute teacher for Middle School classes, as needed;
  • Coach or assistant coach 3 Middle School co-curricular activities or sports; 
  • Supervise study halls and recesses; 
  • Serve as a co-advisor for a group of 8-10 middle school students; 
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of monthly middle school-wide student competitions;
  • Meet regularly with the Emerging Educators cohort;
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development opportunities, and committee meetings as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or other related field
  • Student teaching or other instructional experience is preferred, but not required
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in a camp or other setting
  • Knowledge of child development and a commitment to social-emotional learning,   
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills; 
  • A demonstrated commitment to inclusive Quaker pedagogy based on cultural   competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices; 
  • Familiarity with Google products and ability to integrate technology into best teaching practices; 
  • A strong affinity for the mission of Westtown School and an appreciation for Quaker values and how these inform community processes (meeting structures, decision-making, student discipline, etc.) and interactions.
