Upper School Wellness Counselor

Westtown School is seeking an experienced counselor to serve as a Wellness Counselor for our Upper School day and boarding students in grades 9-12. Reporting to the Dean of Integrated Health and Wellness, the Wellness Counselor will provide a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental space for students to discuss personal and academic concerns. They will be a resource to students regarding mental health issues and help to build a culture of health and wellness at school. The Counselor will provide a variety of counseling services and life skills coaching to students in support of their overall social and emotional health at school. This is a 10-month academic year position.

As an advocate for students’ mental health and education needs, the Wellness Counselor works to support student access to treatment and helps to create and maintain an emotionally healthy, productive, and safe school community.

 The Counselor’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students in grades 9-12 consulting and collaborating with parents and outside treatment providers as needed;
  • Contribute to the Faculty Resource Group for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Peer Counseling Program;
  • In coordination with the Integrated Health and Wellness team, proactively implement programs and interventions to help students achieve success at school;
  • Provide referrals and serve as a liaison between the school and outside agencies and clinicians as needed;
  • Build relationships with families in support of students’ academic, emotional, and behavioral needs;
  • Collaborate on mental health and wellness programs for students and parents;
  • Facilitate crisis responses in urgent student or community mental health situations;
  • Consult with teachers about student mental health needs and participate in student support team meetings;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working with culturally diverse students, families, and colleagues and contribute to building and maintaining an inclusive community;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or related field and 3-5 years of relevant experience working with high school students
  • Experience in trauma-informed care preferred
  • Prior experience in an independent or boarding school environment preferred
  • A professional, collaborative, team-oriented style with empathy, flexibility, and patience
  • Knowledge and experience providing culturally responsive treatment 
  • Extensive knowledge of ethical and legal considerations related to counseling practices
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and oral communication skills and proficiency in communicating and engaging effectively with a wide range of constituencies
  •  A demonstrated commitment to enhancing an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, commitment to social justice, and respect for all voices
  •  A professional, collaborative and team-oriented spirit, and the ability to connect meaningfully with students throughout our diverse community
