Teacher, 5th/6th Grade, Science

Waldron Mercy Academy, a Catholic, co-ed elementary school for students from pre-school to eighth grade sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, seeks a 5th & 6th Grade Teacher for the subject of Science. Position is available immediately. 

Essential Functions

• Prepares 5th/6th grade science curriculum, materials and classroom for student learning.
• Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests. 
• Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate.
• Instructs students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations and hands-on learning.
• Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates those objectives to students.
• Prepares, administers and grades tests and assignments in order to evaluate students' progress
• Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress, and to determine their priorities for their children and their resource needs.
• Collaborates with other teachers, administrators and the Science/Stem Specialist in the development, evaluation, and revision of the middle school science curriculum and labs.
• Demonstrates a strong passion for science
• Attends professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Strong commitment to Catholic, Mercy education with personal and professional presence consistent with the Sisters of Mercy charisms (hospitality, outreach, openness and trust) and Catholic teaching.

 Qualifications

• Teaching Certification
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field of study
• Three years’ experience at an appropriate grade or age level
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, parents and colleagues
• Demonstrated organizational skills

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• Works in a fast paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
• May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
• Works primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment.
• Works intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
